Brazos River: Texas’s Fishing Frontier
Stretching over 1,000 miles from the New Mexico border to the Gulf of Mexico, the Brazos River is the longest river flowing entirely within Texas. Its vast watershed spans 45,510 square miles, with most of this area lying within Texas. The river originates from the confluence of the Salt and Double Mountain Forks in Stonewall County, joined by the Clear Fork above Possum Kingdom Lake, before finally emptying into the Gulf in Brazoria County.
While the Brazos River is often overshadowed by other Texas fishing destinations, it’s truly a hidden gem for anglers. The river offers a diverse and dynamic fishery that attracts both seasoned and novice fishers alike. You can expect to catch a wide variety of species, including Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Striped Bass, White Bass, Catfish, panfish, Carp, Gar, Drum, and Buffalo. It’s not uncommon to enjoy a multi-species day on the Brazos, providing non-stop action and variety in every trip.
Our Brazos River Trips
Fatties Guide Co. focuses on two primary sections of the Brazos, maximizing our clients’ chances of success and enjoyment. We operate in the first 25 miles below Lake Granbury, behind the DeCordova Bend dam, as well as the initial 30 miles below the Lake Whitney dam. These stretches are teeming with fish and showcase some of the most scenic landscapes the Brazos has to offer.
Whether you’re interested in a full-day adventure or a shorter half-day trip, we tailor each experience to suit your needs. And thanks to our unique access, we offer a variety of ways to experience the Brazos – jet boat rides for those looking to cover more ground, rafts for a close-up experience with nature, and wading trips for those who want an immersive connection with the water.
Imagine casting your line into clear, flowing waters as the sun rises over the Texas hills, surrounded by the sounds of nature and the thrill of a potential catch. With our guides at your side, you’ll gain insider knowledge of the river’s best fishing spots, tips on technique, and a seamless, unforgettable day on the water.
Paluxy River: Sight-Fishing Paradise in Glen Rose
The Paluxy River is a lesser-known Texas treasure that provides anglers with an intimate and unique fishing experience. Rising in Erath County and flowing through Hood County, the Paluxy eventually meets the Brazos River in Somervell County near Glen Rose. This stream may be short—only about 37.5 miles—but it’s packed with excellent fishing spots, offering a secluded haven away from more crowded rivers.
Fishing on the Paluxy River
The Paluxy is known for its exceptional sight-fishing opportunities, particularly for species like Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Carp, and Bream. The clear waters allow anglers to see their targets, adding an extra layer of excitement to each catch. There’s something undeniably thrilling about spotting your fish before casting and feeling that jolt of connection when they bite.
Our wading trips on the Paluxy, near Glen Rose, offer full and half-day options that take you right into the heart of this scenic river. Walking through the cool, clear waters of the Paluxy, you’ll be able to connect with nature in a way few other experiences allow. Our guides are experts in navigating these waters and are passionate about sharing their love for this unique river. They’ll assist you with technique, help identify fish, and make sure you enjoy every moment of the trip.
Whether you’re a sight-fishing enthusiast or just curious about this immersive approach, the Paluxy River offers a tranquil yet exciting setting for any angler.
Devils River: The Ultimate Adventure for the True Angler
The Devils River, tucked away in southwestern Texas, is arguably the most pristine river in the state. Part of the Rio Grande drainage basin, the Devils River is famous for its crystal-clear waters and challenging whitewater sections. It begins in northwest Sutton County, where several tributaries, including Dry Devils River, Granger Draw, and Rough Canyon, merge to form this 94-mile-long watercourse. Flowing through Val Verde County, the river eventually empties into the Amistad Reservoir on the Texas-Mexico border near Del Rio.
Known as one of the last truly wild rivers in Texas, the Devils River’s remote location and rugged surroundings help preserve its unspoiled beauty. Much of the river flows underground, where gravel, sand, and limestone act as natural filters, cleansing the water before it reemerges downstream. This creates some of the clearest, cleanest water you’ll ever fish in, making it an angler’s paradise.
The Devils River Experience
Fishing the Devils River is not for the faint of heart. It’s a three-day, four-night adventure that challenges anglers and rewards them with an experience unlike any other. Fatties Guide Co. has been guiding trips on the Devils for over 13 years, and our knowledgeable, passionate staff are among the best in the business when it comes to navigating this extraordinary river.
This multi-day trip is an immersive journey through some of the most beautiful landscapes Texas has to offer. Anglers will have the chance to target Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, and Carp, with plenty of sight-fishing opportunities along the way. Each day brings a new stretch of river to explore, complete with rapids, deep pools, and quiet runs that make for thrilling and varied fishing.
Our Devils River trips include top shelf meals, fly fishing gear and expert guidance, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the wild beauty of this remote destination. Picture yourself casting your line in crystal-clear pools, surrounded by rugged cliffs and the sounds of nature. At night, you’ll camp under the stars, far away from city lights, experiencing the Texas wilderness in its purest form.
This is more than just a fishing trip—it’s a full-scale adventure that combines angling, camping, and exploration. With the Devils River’s incredible biodiversity and stunning landscapes, every moment here is a memory waiting to be made.
